Watercolor

This work is by artist Emil Nolde. The name of the piece is Sea in the Evening. Nolde is considered on of the greatest watercolor painters of his time. The medium is watercolor.  Watercolor is pigments mixed with water and gum arabic.  This artist grew up on a farm. This may be where the inspiration for the landscape and sunsets originated from.  Later on in life, the Nazi regime condemned Nolde's works.  After 1941 he was no longer allowed to paint. As a result he secretly created these watercolors called "unpainted pictures."
